According to the World Health Organization depression affects 121 million people worldwide. It is the leading cause of disability among people ages 15 -44. Approximately 90% of those suffering with depression have also been diagnosed with symptoms of anxiety. Yogis believe that depression is that separation from our Source. Yoga, which means to yoke, allows us to yoke or connect more fully with our Source, ourselves and our world and thus diminish that separation and feelings of separate-ness. Yoga balances the bio-chemistry of the brain. By increasing the production of endorphins, serotonin and enkaphalins and decreasing the stress hormone known as cortisol, the brain is both stimulated and relaxed. Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., says that it is this combination that creates the feel-good response that is present after practicing Yoga. Additionally, the levels of oxcytocin and prolactin, the feel good hormones, are increased while oxygen consumption increases, resting heart rate decreases and muscle stiffness and tension lessen. Building upon this, the philosophy and teaching of Yoga create an environment that fosters the release of ingrained beliefs and thought patterns that often lie at the root of depression and anxiety. During the practice of Yoga the brain is deeply relaxed, allowing an enhanced connection with one’s subconscious and emotions. Infinite Yoga encourages you to make the practice of Yoga uniquely yours, helping you to discover the ways in which each posture can offer you the greatest benefit possible. During the Yoga for Depression and Anxiety classes you will learn techniques that you can take with you to help you manage your mood and bring your emotional body back into balance. Infinite Yoga welcomes those who experience depression, anxiety and emotional imbalances to explore Yoga as the next step toward a more whole and balanced life.
